About this Product
Norethisterone is commonly used for delaying periods. It is particularly useful for women who wish to postpone menstruation for personal or practical reasons, such as during a holiday, a special event, or other circumstances where having a period would be inconvenient. Norethisterone allows for flexibility in managing the timing of menstruation without affecting overall menstrual health or fertility.
Norethisterone tablets contains the progestogen called norethisterone as the active ingredient. Progestogens are similar to the natural female hormone progesterone.
Norethisterone works by mimicking the effects of the natural hormone progesterone. During a typical menstrual cycle, progesterone levels rise after ovulation, helping to maintain the lining of the uterus in preparation for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone levels drop, leading to the shedding of the uterine lining, which results in a period. By taking norethisterone, the levels of synthetic progesterone remain elevated, which prevents the uterine lining from shedding, thus delaying the onset of menstruation.
Like any medication, Norethisterone can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Common side effects include nausea, headaches, dizziness, breast tenderness, and mood changes. Some women may also experience changes in their menstrual cycle, such as irregular bleeding or spotting between periods. Less common but more serious side effects include blood clots, signs of which may include sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, or swelling in the legs. Rarely, women may also experience liver problems, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). If you experience severe or persistent side effects, it is important to contact your healthcare provider immediately.
When taking Norethisterone, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully. The dosage and duration will depend on why you are taking the medication. Typically, for period delay, you will start taking one tablet three times a day, about three days before your period is due, and continue for up to 10–14 days. Your period should start 2 to 3 days after stopping the medication.
Swallow the tablets whole with water, and take them at the same time each day for consistency. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s close to the next scheduled dose, in which case you should skip the missed dose. Always consult your healthcare provider if you are unsure about how to take Norethisterone or if you have any concerns during treatment.
Norethisterone is a synthetic form of progestogen, commonly used in hormonal treatments to regulate menstrual cycles, delay periods, or as a form of contraception. It works by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg and preventing sperm from fertilising any egg that may have already been released.
Norethisterone is not suitable for all women, particularly if you are allergic to norethisterone, other similar hormone medicines, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine. The other ingredients in Norethisterone tablets include lactose, maize starch, and magnesium stearate.
It should not be used if you are pregnant or suspect you might be pregnant, or if you have experienced unexplained vaginal bleeding not related to your menstrual period. Additionally, Norethisterone is not recommended for women with a history of blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or if these conditions run in your family. Women with liver or heart problems, epilepsy, migraines, or asthma should also consult their healthcare provider before using Norethisterone.
Always speak with your doctor to ensure that Norethisterone is a safe and suitable option for you.
