Proscar comprises an active ingredient known as finasteride, belonging to a class of medications referred to as 5 alpha reductase inhibitors. Its primary function is to reduce the size of the prostate gland in men in cases of swelling. The prostate gland, only present in men, resides beneath the bladder and is responsible for producing the fluid component of semen. When the prostate gland becomes enlarged, it can result in a medical condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.
BPH indicates an enlargement of your prostate gland, which can exert pressure on the urinary tube, through which urine exits your body. This can manifest as various urinary issues, including increased frequency of urination, especially during nighttime, urgent and immediate need to urinate, difficulty initiating urination, weak urine flow during urination, interruptions or starts and stops during urination, a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying.
Proscar effectively addresses these symptoms and helps alleviate the discomfort associated with BPH by reducing the size of the swollen prostate gland.
Proscar (finasteride) is typically prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. Proscar is not suitable for women, especially those who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as it can cause birth defects. Women should avoid handling crushed or broken Proscar tablets, as the active ingredient can be absorbed through the skin.
