About this Product
Rigevidon is a widely used combined oral contraceptive pill offering effective protection against pregnancy. This pill contains two active synthetic hormones: ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen, and levonorgestrel, a progestogen. These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries), thickening cervical mucus to impede sperm movement, and thinning the uterine lining, which makes it less likely for a fertilised egg to implant.
It is typically taken as a 21-day pill regimen, where one pill is taken daily for 21 days followed by a 7-day break. During this break, users experience a withdrawal bleed, which mimics a menstrual period. After the 7-day break, a new pack is started, and the cycle continues.
Beyond its contraceptive function, Rigevidon offers several benefits related to menstrual cycle regulation. Many women experience more regular, predictable periods while taking Rigevidon, which can be particularly beneficial for those with irregular menstrual cycles. Additionally, periods often become lighter and less painful, making the pill a useful option for women who suffer from conditions such as dysmenorrhea (painful periods) or menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding). By stabilising hormone levels throughout the menstrual cycle, Rigevidon can also help to alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), including mood swings, bloating, and breast tenderness.
The daily dosage is one coated tablet. You should try to take your pill at about the same time each day. You may find it easiest to take it either last thing at night or first thing in the morning. Swallow each pill whole, with water if necessary.
Each pack of Rigevidon contains 1 memo strip of 21 coated tablets or 3 memo strips of 21 coated tablets. The memo strip has been designed to help you remember to take your pills. The pack is marked with the day of the week on which each pill should be taken. Following the direction of the arrow printed on the pack you should take one pill each day for 21 days until the strip is empty. Then you have 7 days when you do not take a pill. During the 7 pill-free days, on day 2 or 3, you will have menstruation-like withdrawal bleeding, i.e. your monthly period.
Start your next strip on the 8th day (following the 7 pill-free days) – even if the bleeding has not yet ended. As long as you take Rigevidon correctly, you will always start each new strip on the same day of the week, and you will always have your monthly period on the same day of the month.
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Common side effects include nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, and mood changes. These effects are usually mild and tend to diminish after the first few months as the body adjusts to the hormones. Some women may also experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting, particularly during the first few cycles of taking the pill. While this can be unsettling, it is generally not a cause for concern and often resolves on its own. However, if these symptoms persist, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider.
Before starting Rigevidon, it is important to be aware of certain product warnings. Rigevidon is not suitable for women with a history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease, or certain types of cancer, such as breast or liver cancer. It should not be used if you have severe liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Smoking, particularly in women over 35, increases the risk of serious side effects, such as blood clots, when using Rigevidon. This contraceptive pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so using condoms alongside it is recommended for STI prevention. Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure Rigevidon is the right contraceptive for you based on your medical history.
