About this Product
Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill that contains two hormones, oestrogen and progestogen, making it highly effective in preventing pregnancy when taken correctly. It works by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the lining of the uterus to prevent a fertilised egg from implanting. Yasmin is taken daily for 21 days, followed by a seven-day break during which you may experience a withdrawal bleed, similar to a period. When used consistently and correctly, Yasmin is over 99% effective as a contraceptive method. In addition to preventing pregnancy, it can also help regulate periods and reduce menstrual cramps for some women. However, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so using condoms is recommended for STI prevention.
Yasmin comes in strips of 21 pills, each labelled with the day of the week. Take one pill at the same time every day, starting with the pill marked for the correct day. Follow the direction of the arrows on the strip, taking one pill each day until all 21 are finished. Swallow each pill whole, using water if needed, without chewing. After completing the strip, you will have a seven-day break with no pills before starting the next pack. If you take the last pill of one pack on a Friday, you will take the first pill of your next pack on the Saturday of the following week.
Within a few days of taking the last pill from the strip, you should have a withdrawal bleed like a period. This bleed may not have finished when it is time to start your next strip of pills. You don’t need to use extra contraception during these seven pill-free days – if you have taken your pills correctly and start the next strip of pills on time.
Like all medications, Yasmin can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, and mood changes. Some women may also experience changes in their menstrual cycle, such as spotting between periods or missed periods. Less common but more serious side effects include an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack, particularly in women who smoke or are over 35. Rare side effects can include high blood pressure, gallbladder problems, or liver issues. If you experience severe symptoms, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or leg swelling, seek medical attention immediately. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns about side effects while taking Yasmin.
Before starting Yasmin, it’s important to be aware of several product warnings. Yasmin is not suitable for women with a history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease, or certain types of cancer, such as breast or liver cancer. It should also be avoided if you have severe liver or kidney disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or if you’re allergic to any of its ingredients. Smoking, particularly in women over 35, significantly increases the risk of serious side effects, including blood clots, when using Yasmin. Always discuss your full medical history with your healthcare provider to ensure Yasmin is the right choice for you.
